Shade Metals turns hand-carved and 3D printed wax sculptures into botanical jewelry. Sometimes they cast little bits of real plants. Shade Metals work in gold, silver, and bronze, doing all the casting and finishing of the pieces from their garage in Richmond, Virginia.

Message from Shade Metals

I am Sara, a volunteer tree steward for the city. I learn what I can from pulling up invasive species and planting native ones, pruning street trees, and helping to restore green spaces. Cesar was trained as a pharmaceutical chemist which makes him comfortable with the equipment and technical aspects of the jewelry trade- the fire and the acetylene torch, the beakers, and temperature gauges and seemingly endless small tools that crowd our garage.

We are attempting to capture that perfect imperfection of nature. Our jewelry plays with asymmetry, lost curves, and patterns. All pieces mimic a specific plant or natural phenomena- like the creation of tree rings or the geometry of flower petals.

Our work takes a scientific approach by remaining faithful to the natural, realistic beauty of each specific species that we work with. We package our work with little stories about the plant, and our website's blog explores the artistry and complexity of the green world.

"Field of Clover Ring"

This intricate 3D sculpted silver clover ring has a slightly larger four-leaf clover mixed into a field of three-leaved ones. From a distance, this wide band ring looks almost like lace.

The detail up close shows different sized clovers arrayed in a mosaic pattern around the piece. Several three leaved clovers, some large and sculpted with central dips and rough texture, others smaller and polished to a high reflective shine, encircle one four leaf clover.

Cast in gold or silver, we polish the surfaces to a bright shine and leave the recessed portions textured.
