How Was Your Day?

If your kids are anything like mine, then its like pulling teeth to get them to answer "How was your day?" or "What did you do today?". Responses are usually one worded, and then that's it. So how can we get more out of our conversations with our kids? Communication is so important when it comes to having a good relationship with our children. So here are some open ended questions that will mostly require more than one word answers or should be able to elaborate on the topic!

Here are some extra tips when communicating with our children.....

Talk! Yes, this may seem like common sense, but really talk with your kids. Give them opportunities to tell you about their day and really listen. With younger kids, take any opportunity to have a conversation. At the grocery store, talk with them about what you need to buy, on a car ride talk about where you are going, demonstrate effective communication skills at any opportunity.

Listen! Truly listen and reflect. We all get busy and have a lot on our plate, but it is important to listen to what your kids have to say and reflect on what they are saying. This is also an opportunity to teach kids appropriate times to have a conversation. If they want to tell you a story when you need to hop on a Zoom meeting or when you are already in a conversation with someone else, explain to them you would love to have this conversation when there is more time.

Body Language. Point out body language and facial expressions, especially to younger kids. This is helpful in their adaptation of good social cues. We may be saying one thing, but our face may be saying another.

More questions to ask.....

  1. What do you know how to do that you can teach to others?

  2. If you could be a sound, what would it be?

  3. What is the funniest thing that ever happened to you?

  4. What do you think your life will be like in the future?

  5. What is the most wonderful thing that ever happened to you?

  6. Who is your best friend and why?

  7. If you could choose a new name for yourself, what would it be, and why?

  8. What's the coolest thing you saw someone do today?

  9. How would you change the world if you could?

What unique questions can you come up with? Be creative & enjoy your conversations with your children!
